TWW Roundup: Old Attacks Are New Again
Health Care. Again.
Republicans have once again released another proposal to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Trumpcare 3.0 once again includes block grants to shift the burden of increased costs to the states. Worse, the funds sent to the states would be cut by ⅓ by the year 2026. At the same time, Bernie Sanders is championing a bill that would give Medicare coverage to all–a single payer plan. Perhaps this time Congress will come together and meet somewhere in the middle. Somewhere that millions of people won’t lose their health care.
There is either a deal or there isn’t. Top Congressional Democrats, Pelosi and Schumer, reported they had reached a deal with Trump which would codify DACA into law in exchange for increased border security. Trump then tweeted there was no deal but then proceeded to outline the “deal.” Maybe the man who supposedly wrote The Art of the Deal doesn’t actually know what the word means. Nevertheless, tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants are no doubt hopeful this really means DACA status will become permanent. And maybe, just maybe, Trump’s heart grew a few sizes this week.
Too Little, Way Too Late
In a world where an 8 year old biracial boy was lynched by older children, it took a push from Congress for Trump to condemn racism. Weeks after the tragic death of Heather Heyer at the Charlottesville neo-Nazi rally, this week Congress passed a resolution condemning white Supremacy and Trump signed it. How sad is it that our “President” has to be goaded into condemning racism? Condemning violence? How sad is it that the first thing the police chief involved in the lynching incident did was say we needed to protect the older children who lynched the 8 year old boy? Thankfully, the New Hampshire Governor and Attorney General are investigating this lynching as a hate crime.
The Wheels Keep Turning
This week Robert Mueller hired another attorney for his team; this one specializes in money laundering. Plus reports are circulating that the investigative team has served Facebook with a warrant, right on the heels of their public admission that $100,000 worth of election related ads were sold to a Kremlin backed agency.
