Raymond Buckley

Background & Experience

Current chairman of the New Hampshire Democratic Party & President of the Association of State Democratic Chairs since 2009. Formerly served in New Hampshire House of Representatives.

Consistent Values

Long history fighting for LGBTQ causes, emphasizes the importance of grassroots organizing, as well as downticket races, led a walkout among legislators over Newt Gingrich attack of Clinton affair.

Baggage

On video making lewd remarks and strange comments about Hitler, accused of possessing child pornography, which was investigated and found to be without merit.

Endorsements

Endorsed by all four members of his state’s congressional delegation. Together they make up the nation’s first all-female delegation.

Appeal to Demographics

First openly gay president of the Association of State Democratic Chairs; known as a champion of grassroots organizing.

Compatible With TWW’s Goals & Mission

Major proponent of grassroots organization; has a history of public activism; strong on LGBTQ equality.

 

Keith Ellison 

Background & Experience

Criminal defense attorney; co-chair of Congressional Progressive Caucus, member of Congressional Black Caucus and more than a dozen other caucuses; current Minnesota Rep since 2007.

Consistent Values

Accomplished civil rights, employment, and criminal defense attorney with long record of community and civic engagement. Family’s involvement in civil rights struggle influenced his commitment to these issues.

Baggage

Too far left to attract rural democrats; Muslim identity incites inflammatory rhetoric; was un-endorsed by the Anti-Defamation League. 

Endorsements

Over 30 organizations; Schumer, Reid, Sanders, Warren, and as many as 70 voting DNC members (224 needed)

Appeal to Demographics

1st Muslim elected to Congress; first black congressman from Minnesota; member of Congressional Progressive Caucus, one of the few members of Congress to back Bernie Sanders in the primary; representative of a midwestern swing state.

Compatible With TWW’s Goals & Mission

Active member of party with an accomplished history. The question some ask: “Is he too radical?”

Tom Perez

Background & Experience

Current Secretary of Labor (2013), past assistant Attorney General of the Civil Rights Division of the Dept. of Justice. Born in Buffalo NY to immigrant parents from the Dominican Republic.

Consistent Values

Believes that all workers have rights and a fair day’s work should be compensated by fair wages. Enacted policies ensuring same sex couples benefit from new FMLA laws.

Baggage

Considered a far-left idealogue and the most progressive of all of Obama’s appointees. Trump appointee Jeff Sessions has been a very vocal opponent. 

Endorsements

National Farm Workers, International Association of Firefighters, 4 Govs -Terry McAuliffe, John Hickenlooper, Gina Raimondo and John Bel Edwards.

Appeal to Demographics

Speaks for workers and the underprivilaged. Strong supporter of LGBTQ rights. Would be the first Latino chair of the DNC.

Compatible With TWW’s Goals & Mission

Believes Democrats failed miserably at the 50 State plan and that we need to get out and talk to actual people.

Sally Boyton-Brown

Background & Experience

Current Executive Director Idaho Democratic Party. BA Communications Idaho State 2005. Manager for various Idaho campaigns 2005-2010.

Consistent Values

From a working class family. Put herself through college. Involved in her community. A mentor to women. Dedicated to Democratic party leadership for over ten years.

Baggage

Self-acknowledged outsider. Little national political experience. Idaho lost 4 key legislative seats in 2016. Unaccustomed to working with large, diverse staff.

Endorsements

No national or high profile endorsements. Endorsed by Idaho Democratic Party Chair and The 99% Movement for position on voter equality..

Appeal to Demographics

Committed to women’s issues. Most important mission: clear all barriers to the right to vote. Experience as a Democrat in a rural, red state.

Compatible With TWW’s Goals & Mission

Full inclusivity in the democratic process. Insurgency against Republican Party. Women’s voices must be heard.

 

Jamie Harrison 

Background & Experience

Current Chairman South Carolina Democratic Party. Former Executive Director for the House Democratic Caucus. Former lobbyist for the Podesta Group. JD from Georgetown. Grew up in poverty.

Consistent Values

Believes in a “big tent” approach, refusing to classify himself beyond “Democrat.” Works across the aisle. Endorses 50-state strategy used by Howard Dean in ’05-’06. Personally affected by poverty and high student loan debt.

Baggage

Relatively unknown. Former lobbyist. Associated with John Podesta through his lobbying, though he claims to have never worked with Podesta personally.

Endorsements

Reps. Sanford Bishop (GA), Jim Clyburn (SC), Marcia Fudge (OH), John Larson (CT), Bennie Thompson (MS), former Reps. John Spratt (SC) and John Barrow (GA), former Del. Donna Christensen.

Appeal to Demographics

Speaks personally and convincingly about poverty and race. Has had success in a red state by highlighting common socioeconomic concerns.

Compatible With TWW’s Goals & Mission

Emphasizes rebuiling the Democratic Party from grassroots. Has both federal and state experience. Speaks authentically about poverty.

Pete Buttigieg 

Background & Experience

Mayor of South Bend, Ind.; president of the Indiana Urban Mayors Caucus; former Naval lieutenant serving in Afghanistan, a Rhodes scholar.

Consistent Values

Believes in diversity, good governance, championing progressive values in red districts. Came out as gay during a campaign and received wide support on election day.

Baggage

Young and relatively inexperienced and unknown outside of his hometown.

Endorsements

John Zody, Chairman of the Indiana Democratic Party, and Nan Whaley, mayor of Dayton, OH

Appeal to Demographics

Has been a popular political figure in a red state within the Rust Belt. Has won reelection in an ethnically diverse community.
